This piece was created to symbolize both Vita’s letter of longing to Virginia and their relationship dynamic as a whole. Both women are characterized by flowers chosen to reflect how they saw each other. In Vita, Virginia saw a radiant, elegant femininity, but she also saw Vita’s self proclaimed “standoffish” nature. Her soft beauty and sharp thorns are captured in an English rose. By comparison, Virginia had an unassuming front, hiding a sharp intellect, wit, and perceptive nature.
However, Vita’s string of lovers bloomed a jealousy in Virginia that added cracks to her underlying fragility she hid with the mask of literary brilliance. Virginia is represented by forget-me-nots for their delicacy and appellative meaning. While both flowers circle each other, they never touch, as Vita was on her way to Tehran when she sent this letter to Virginia back in England. The golden ladybug takes on two meanings. The first is to symbolize the …. shall we say “pollination” between the two women. The second is to show Vita’s habit of flitting between lovers, never settling on only one.
