Artist Statement

I started my artistic career in New York City as a magazine illustrator and graphic designer but was always drawn to metal smithing and jewelry.
I formally opened his jewelry studio in 2007, specializing in hand fabricated jewelry incorporating and unusual mix of preciouses and semi precious gemstones. My design sensibility is fresh and modern but not sterile, with a very subtle nod to historical styles of jewelry. I prefer a spare approach so that the pieces are not overly decorative. The settings are part of the overall design, elements like the prongs, bezels, and rivets become as important as the stones or metals used. Hand-selected stones from India, Sri Lanka, and South America are combined in unexpected and delightful compositions of size, color, and scale. The result is clean, modern jewelry that moves gracefully with the wearer's body.

I always knew I would be an artist and loved fine crafts from an early age, I was really fortunate my high school had a very strong craft curriculum, including half a semester of jewelry making from my freshman through senior years. I learned how to carve wax models, cast, solder and finishing techniques.

I attended Rhode Island School of Design as an illustration major and took every jewelry elective class possible. The head of the metals department there encouraged me to switch majors and I seriously considered it. In the end I did not transfer but continued to make jewelry through out my undergraduate career. I went on received a MA in Graphic Design from Metropolitan University of Manchester in England and worked for the next 15 years in New York City as an Illustrator and Designer. Working for publications such as GQ, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and Time to name a few.

All the while I made jewelry for my family and friends but never though I would become a jewelry designer. Through my connections in publishing I began to get opportunities to have my jewelry featured in magazines. The publicity and attention I received from the press turned into sales, I had to create a website sales portal and brand which became the foundation for me to be able to establish Russell Jones Fine Jewelry in 2007.

My work has been worn by Dame Helen Mirren, Alisha Keys and Meryl Streep and has been featured many magazines including the New York Times, W and Elle. My jewelry was also included in the internationally acclaimed book, "The New Jewelers" by Olivier Dupon published in 2013 by Thames and Hudson. Exhibitions include: Adorned, Open Concept, Rock On and Forces of Nature/Natural Forces and my work is available in many fine boutiques and jewelry stores across the United States and Puerto Rico.
