Artist Statement

Cultures all over the world, including American Indian, have incorporated enameling into their jewelry and other art for color and texture. Ancient Native American Indians decorated shells with carvings and enamel work.

My piece combines beautiful traditional Native American craftsmanship with contemporary enameling. The necklace's colors were chosen to compliment the turquoise, the sacred “living stone”, and portray American plains, skies, and mountains.

Artist bio:
After culminating a fulfilling career as a Washington, DC restaurant owner, Joan was lucky enough to return her first love – creating art with jewelry fabrication.

Silverworks Studio in Glen Echo Park, Maryland, started her off on her creative journey. After taking all of the metalsmithing classes offered, an enameling class unveiled her love of incorporating color into her designs.

Joan has taken classes from renowned artists at the Enamelist’s Society, Pocosin Arts, and at the Carpenter Art Center.

Formerly a member of the Enamelist’s Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Joan is teaching Beginning Enamel at Glen Echo Park.
