Artist Statement

“In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.”
~The Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy

The seventh generation philosophy is part of the Constitution of the Iroquois Nation. It is about preserving and saving our precious planet for future generations. Many indigenous nations around the world live by this philosophy.
The sash I created is made from leftover ribbon, a broken necklace and earrings, beads and the beautiful turquoise and silver buttons made by Damon and Marie Thompson. All of these elements are sewn onto a sash made of used jeans and pants. The new pieces of the sash are the buttons, which although new, have been repurposed from their original intent. Fashioning something new from things that would be discarded gives me a sense of purpose and keeps with the philosophy of keeping the earth healthy for generations to come.

Artist bio:

Jackie Carmean is a member of the Oneida Band of Six Nations of the Grand River. She was born in Milford, Delaware in 1959 and currently lives in Lewes, Delaware. Jackie is a self-taught artist who uses a variety of mediums to satisfy her creative energies. She is a painter, a drawer, a mosaic artist, a seamstress, a multimedia artist and an assemblage artist. She taught herself through how-to books, practice, and studying her artist sister, June. Her mother Lorraine was a gifted seamstress, crafter, and sketch artist. She and June were an inspiration to Jackie as she was exploring her place in the world of art.
Jackie has always been a collector of bits and pieces and broken things. She now repurposes these beads, ribbon, buttons, fabric, broken jewelry, etc. to create art that is functional and fun. Keeping even these small bits and pieces and broken things out of landfills is imperative to the health of the earth.
Jackie makes art primarily for her own happiness and peace of mind.
