Artist Statement

I wanted to echo traditional symbolism and iconography that is present in Dine´ jewelry. I had a pair of Victorian Era Cut Steel buckles in my collection and the fan pattern immediately reminded me the symbol of the sun which you see referenced in the original pair of earrings. In the Navajo culture, sunshine is synonymous with good cheer. The sun symbol embodies universal harmony. At its core, this symbol exemplifies high spirits and good fortune. The earrings are fabricated as Day to Night earrings which means the cut steel fan elements can be taken on an off to provide more versatility- in essence one pair of earrings that can become two.
