Artist Statement

Drawn to organized chaos, this body of work explores the unique buildup and overflow that occurs within the jumble of a trash heap. Intrigued by the layered, squeezed, folded, and forced materials of haptically overfilled containers, I find resolve in the raw and neglectful treatment for each discarded component for it to “fit in”.

I honor my left-over materials, mistakes, and offcuts by giving them a place within the industrial waste bouquets that I craft. Through recycling and repurposing these sterling silver scraps from discarded projects of my refinement bin, I aim to elevate the work that has been done but goes unseen or unrefined.

Artist bio:
Nick Rosin is a hand-engraver, metalsmith, and educator from Toronto, Canada. Bringing his cartoonish illustrative style to engraving and playful imagination to the metal objects that he crafts, Rosin questions taste and class within fine craft. Through his wry sense of humor and low brow commentary, Nick explores themes such as addiction, social media, religion, and consumer culture to further understand what society might deem as precious.

Rosin earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and his Master of Fine Arts degree at the State University of New York at New Paltz in the Metal program. He has led numerous metal and engraving workshops at the Center for Craft Nova Scotia, Brooklyn Metal Works, NSCAD University, and Snow Farm Craft Program. Upon graduating from SUNY New Paltz, Rosin now continues his practice and artistic career in New York City as the Jewelry Studio Technician at Pratt Institute.
