The Vanishing Cube
How does our body perceive space? How can jewelry alter our perception of our own bodily field?
In The Vanishing Cube series I begin by reconstructing a cubic space defined by lines. Through the deformation, dissolution, and reconfiguration of these lines, I attempt to create a renewed sense of spatial experience. The ear, as a unique part of the body, becomes a site of transformation. When the earrings are worn, they reshape the body’s perception of its surrounding field. As the work merges with the body, the boundaries between body and space are reexamined and reexperienced.

Artist Bio:
Jiayi Lao (b.1993 Shaoxing) is a jewelry designer based in the Netherlands. Her practice explores the relationship between highly polished material surface, symbolism, and cultural identity through jewelry and wearable objects. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2019. Since 2025, she has been a member of Pool Jewelry, a collective in Amsterdam. Her works were selected for the Marzee International Graduate Show 2019 and have been exhibited in the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and China.
